With the rapid development of cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence, network bandwidth demand is exploding. Traditional 1 Gigabit and 10G networks are no longer able to meet the stringent requirements of modern data centers. Consequently, 100G optical modules have emerged as a core component for building high-speed networks. The 100G QSFP28 module, with its compact size and powerful performance, has become the preferred choice for 100G connectivity in data centers, high-performance computing networks, and telecommunications networks.

The core function of the 100G QSFP28 is to perform optical-to-electrical conversion of 100Gbps data, enabling network devices (such as switches and routers) to communicate at high speeds over optical fiber. Its key advantages include:

  • High bandwidth and low latency: These modules meet the demands of large data transmission and real-time applications, significantly improving network performance.

  • High density: The compact design of the QSFP28 module allows more ports to fit into a single device panel, increasing port density.

  • Easy deployment: Hot-swappable functionality simplifies installation and maintenance, allowing modules to be replaced without shutting down the device.

100G QSFP28 is widely used in scenarios requiring high-bandwidth, long- and short-distance data transmission:

  • Data Center Interconnect: Connects servers and switches, and switches within a data center, to build a high-throughput backbone network.

  • Data Center Interconnect: Enables efficient and reliable data transmission and synchronization between geographically dispersed data centers.

  • Metropolitan Area Network: Provides high-speed transmission services within a city-wide telecommunications network.

  • High-Performance Computing: Connects servers in computing clusters to meet the ultra-high bandwidth requirements of scientific research and complex simulations.

How to Choose the Right 100G QSFP28 Module?

Choosing the right 100G QSFP28 module is critical to ensuring network stability and performance.

Transmission distance: This is the most important consideration.

For short distances (<100 meters): 100GBASE-SR4 modules are typically used with multimode fiber (such as OM3/OM4) for lower cost. For long-distance (>10 km): 100GBASE-LR4 or 100GBASE-ER4 modules are typically used with single-mode fiber.

Compatibility: Ensure that the selected module is compatible with your network equipment (switches, routers, etc.). It is recommended to check the device manufacturer's compatibility list or choose a third-party brand with a proven compatibility guarantee.

Connector Type: QSFP28 modules typically use LC or MPO connectors. SR4 modules typically use MPO connectors, while LR4/ER4 modules use LC connectors.
