This article will introduce OM5 fiber jumpers. In order to distinguish different fiber jumpers, different colors of outer sheath are used. For non-military use, single - mode optical fiber is generally yellow jacket. In a multi-mode optical fiber, OM1 and OM2 are orange, OM3 and OM4 are aqua blue, and OM5 is aqua green. Now that you know the color and appearance of the OM5, let's move on to the advantages of the OM5 fiber jumper.

1, fiber loss is lower

OM5 is the name of the new wideband multimode fiber. The attenuation is reduced to 3.0 dB/km from 3.5 dB/km of the previous OM3 and OM4 fiber, and the bandwidth requirement at 953nm wavelength is increased. The geometry of the OM5 (50μm core, 125μm cladding) is the same as that of the OM3 and OM4, so it is downward compatible with these types of fibers.

2. Support applications with higher bandwidth

OM5 fiber also supports future 400G Ethernet. For faster 400G Ethernet applications such as 400G Base-SR4.2 (4 pairs of fiber 2 wavelengths, each channel using 50G PAM4) or 400G Base-SR4.4(4 pairs of fiber 4 wavelengths, each channel using 25GNRZ), Only 8-core OM5 fiber is required. The OM5 fiber is a laser-optimized multimode fiber (MMF) with specific bandwidth characteristics for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). The purpose of this new fiber classification method is to provide support for a variety of "short" wavelengths between 850nm and 950nm, which are suitable for high bandwidth applications after aggregation.

The operating wavelength of the OM5 fiber jumper is 850/1300 nm, and it can support at least four wavelengths. The usual operating wavelengths of OM3 and OM4 are 850nm and 1300nm. In other words, the traditional OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4 multi-mode fiber has only one channel, while OM5 has four channels, which improves the transmission capacity by four times.

By combining short wave division multiplexing (SWDM) and parallel transmission technology, OM5 can support 200/400G Ethernet applications with only 8-core wideband multimode fiber (WBMMF), which greatly reduces the number of fiber cores and reduces the network wiring cost to a large extent.

3. The transmission distance of optical fibers OM5 is longer than that of optical fibers OM3 and OM4

The OM5 fiber is more scalable and flexible. It can support high-speed network transmission with fewer multi-mode fiber cores, and the cost and power consumption are much lower than that of single-mode fiber. Therefore, it will be widely used in 100G/400G/1T ultra-large data centers in the future.
