ONU is a user-end device in an optical network. It is placed on the user-end and used in conjunction with the OLT to implement Ethernet Layer 2 and Layer 3 functions and provide users with voice, data and multimedia services. Its main functions are:
• Select to receive data transmitted by OLT.
• Respond to management commands issued by the OLT and adjust accordingly.
• Cache the user's Ethernet data and transmit it in the upstream direction in the transmission window assigned by the OLT.
• Other user management functions.
