In practical applications, due to the variety of fiber link lengths, the two optical module standards, 100G QSFP28 SR4 and 100G QSFP28 LR4, are far from meeting the needs of deploying data centers in the most cost-effective manner. Therefore, the 100G CLR4 Alliance developed the 100G QSFP28 CLR4 standard.

The 100G QSFP28 CLR4 optical module adopts wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology, the data transmission rate of each channel is up to 26Gbps, duplex LC interface, supports CDR (clock recovery circuit), the maximum power consumption is less than 3.5W, and OS2 single-mode The transmission distance of optical fiber can reach 2KM, it supports DDM digital monitoring and diagnosis function, and it is in line with commercial-grade working temperature. It is a four-channel full-duplex transceiver module.

In addition, 100G QSFP28 CLR4 optical module and 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module are basically the same in terms of working wavelength, working temperature, transmission distance, working principle, etc., but in contrast, 100G QSFP28 CLR4 optical module is used in high-performance computing, high-frequency trading, etc. field will be more favored. The reason is: the 100G QSFP28 CLR4 optical module can be used for both optical fiber links with forward error correction (FEC) and fiber links without forward error correction (FEC), maintaining low latency and low Power consumption performance. The 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module can only be used for optical fiber links with forward error correction (FEC) function, and is mainly used in general applications such as traditional data centers.
