1, the SFP
SFP's full English name is small form-factor Pluggable, translated as small hot-swappable transceiver, it defines the single channel SFP package from 1Gb/s to 28Gb/s should comply with the standard, SFP module by placing CDR and dispersion compensation outside the module. Thus, the size and power consumption of the optical module are reduced. SFP is an encapsulation of gigabit optical modules, and its transmission rates are 1.25 Gbit/s, 2.5 Gbit/s, and 6 Gbit/s.
2, SFP +
SFP+ is the mainstream packaging form of 10G optical module. SFP+ optical module usually transmits light at the wavelength of 850nm, 1310nm or 1550nm. It is used for 10G bps SONET/SDH, fibre channel, gigabit Ethernet. DWDM links are also included for 10 gigabit Ethernet and other applications. SFP+ optical modules have more compact dimensions than X2 and XFP packages (same dimensions as SFP) and lower cost than XFP,X2,XENPAK products.
Many friends do not know the encapsulation types of optical modules very well. In this article, ETU-LINK will introduce common optical module encapsulation types.

3, XFP
XFP is a hot-swapable 10G optical module package. It is an optical transceiver independent of the communication protocol. It usually operates at 850nm,1310nm or 1550nm for 10Gbps SONET/SDH, Fibre channel, gigabit Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet. DWDM links are also included for 10 gigabit Ethernet and other applications.
4, SFP28
The SFP28 is the encapsulation of the 25G optical module, which includes SR, LR, ER, CWDM, and DWDM.
5, QSFP +
QSFP, full name of Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable, uses four independent transceiver channels with 10G transmission rate, and the total transmission rate can reach 40G. QSFP+ is born to meet the market demand for high-speed pluggable solutions with higher density.
6, QSFP28
The size of the 100G QSFP28 optical module is the same as that of the QSFP+ optical module. It also has four parallel data channels, but the transmission rate of each channel increases from 10Gbit/s to 25Gbit/s, thus achieving a transmission rate of 100Gbps. The QSFP28 optical module can be upgraded from 25 GB to 100 GB without 40 GB.
In addition, the four 25Gb/s parallel data channels of the QSFP28 optical module also comply with the 100G Ethernet standard. In a 100G fiber link composed of QSFP28 optical module, the 100G uplink is composed of four 25G links. The network architecture of each 25G downlink is exactly the same as that of the 10G network, but the transmission capacity of the entire network is greatly increased. Therefore, compared with the 10G→40G→100G upgrade, the 10G→25G→100G upgrade can greatly simplify the cabling system of the data center and reduce the laying cost of the cabling system.
