1、 Differences between OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4 fiber jumpers

1. Different parameters

(1) OM1 refers to a 50 um or 62.5 um core diameter multimode optical fiber with 850/1300 nm full injection bandwidth above 200/500 MHz. km;

(2) OM2 refers to a 50 um or 62.5 um core diameter multimode optical fiber with 850/1300 nm full injection bandwidth over 500/500 MHz. km;

(3) OM3 is a 50um core diameter multimode fiber optimized by 850nm laser. In 10Gb/s Ethernet with 850nm VCSEL, the optical fiber transmission distance can reach 300m;

(4) The OM4 is an upgraded version of the multimode optical OM3 fiber. The optical fiber transmission distance can reach 550m.

2. Different uses

OM1 and OM2 have been widely deployed in buildings for many years, supporting Ethernet transmission with a maximum of 1GB;

OM3 and OM4 optical cables are usually used in the cabling environment of the data center, supporting the transmission of 10G or even 40/100G high-speed Ethernet networks.

3. Different fiber designs

OM1 and OM2 use LED (light emitting diode) as the basic light source for transmission, while OM3 and OM4 are applicable to both LED and LD (laser diode) light source transmission.

4. Differences in transmission speed and bandwidth

(1) OM1: With large core diameter and numerical aperture, it has strong light gathering ability and bending resistance;

(2) OM2: The core diameter and numerical aperture are relatively small, which effectively reduces the mode dispersion of multimode fiber, significantly increases the bandwidth, and reduces the production cost by 1/3;

(3) OM3: Flame retardant sheath is used to prevent flame spread, smoke, acid gas and toxic gas emission, and meet the requirements of 10 Gb/s transmission rate;

(4) OM4: Developed for VSCEL laser transmission, its effective bandwidth is more than twice that of OM3.

Select the correct connector. The connectors of optical fiber jumper are LC/SC/ST/FC/MPO/MTP. If the interfaces at both ends of the equipment are the same, we can use LC-LC/SC-SC/MPO-MPO. If the interfaces at both ends of the equipment are different, we can use LC-SC/LC-ST/LC-FC connection mode.
