1.25G Multiple Mode

SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+and QSFP28 are all encapsulation types of optical modules. These hot pluggable optical modules can be used to connect network switches and other network devices (such as servers) for data transmission. Before making clear the difference between these package types, you need to know what the SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP and QSFP28 packages are. Next, we will introduce these package types separately.

1、SFP

SFP is the abbreviation of SMALL FORM PLUGGABLE, which can be simply understood as an upgraded version of GBIC. Its volume is only 1/2 of that of GBIC modules. This design greatly increases the port density of network devices. The transmission rates of SFP encapsulated optical modules are 155M, 1.25G, 2.5G, etc. The interface types are mainly LC interfaces, which are generally used in SONET/SDH networks, 100M/Gigabit Ethernet, and other low-speed transmission applications.

2、SFP+

SFP+and SFP have the same appearance and size. The transmission rates of SFP+encapsulated optical modules are 6G, 8G, 10G, etc. The packaging type includes 6G/8GFC optical modules, 10G optical modules, 10G electrical interface modules, 10G DAC high-speed cables, and 10G AOC active optical cables. SFP+series products are mainly used in 10G (10GBASE-SR) Ethernet links in data centers.

3、SFP28

SFP28 is an enhanced version of SFP+. It has the same size as SFP+, but it can support a single channel 25Gb/s rate. SFP28 provides an efficient solution for 10G-25G-100G network upgrade, which can meet the continuous growth needs of the next-generation data center network.

4、QSFP+

QSFP+encapsulation can support 4-channel transmission at the same time. The data rate of each channel is 10Gbit/s, and 40Gbps transmission rate is achieved through 4 channels. Compared with SFP+, the transmission rate of the QSFP+optical module can reach four times that of the SFP+optical module. When deploying a 40G network, the QSFP+optical module can be directly used, thus effectively saving costs and improving port density.

5、QSFP28

The QSFP28 encapsulation type is created to meet the requirements of 100G applications. It can support four channels of transmission at the same time. The data rate of each channel is 25Gbit/s, and the transmission rate of 100Gbps is achieved through four channels. It can meet 100G Ethernet (4 × 25Gbps) and EDR InfiniBand.

After introducing the five types of packaging, I will explain some differences among them. In terms of speed, SFP is an optical module package type with a speed generally below 3G; SFP+is the packaging type of 6G-16G optical module; SFP28 is the packaging type of 25G/32G optical modules; QSFP+is the packaging type of 40G/56G optical modules; QSFP28 is a 100G optical module package.
