Looking back at the development of the 100G light module, the development and improvement of the packaging styles (CFP, CFP2, CFP4) and standards are mainly based on low cost and low power consumption. The QSFP28 optical module happens to meet these requirements. The QSFP28 light module compares with other 100G light modules from the aspects of port density, power consumption and cost.

※ Portal density

The first generation of 100G optical module is a very large CFP light module, and then CFP2 and CFP4 light modules appear. Among them, the CFP4 light module is currently the latest generation of 100G light modules. Its width is only 1/4 of the CFP light module. The encapsulation style of the QSFP28 light module is smaller than the CFP4 light module, which means that the QSFP28 optical module has a higher port density on the switch.

※ Power consumption

The power consumption of QSFP28 optical modules usually does not exceed 3.5W, and the power consumption of other 100G light modules is usually between 6W and 24W. From this point of view, the QSFP28 light module is much lower than the power consumption of other 100G light modules.

The current data center is mainly the 10G network architecture. Its interconnection solutions are mainly 10GBase-SR light modules and dual-work LC multi-mode fiber jump lines. If the existing 10G network architecture is directly upgraded to 40/100G networks, it will It will save a lot of time and cost.
